Upon arrival in the Moche Valley, you'll be warmly welcomed by a local family, direct descendants of the ancient people who constructed the awe-inspiring Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon. These pyramids were once the epicentre of power on Peru's northern coast during the Moche era. As you explore these impressive structures, take note of the remarkable adobe frescoes adorning the walls of the Temple of the Moon, painstakingly unearthed by archaeologists.
The journey continues towards Huanchaco, an age-old fishermenâs cove where you can appreciate the ancient boats known as "Caballitos de Totora". Here, the time-honoured tradition of artisanal fishing is still very much alive.
In the afternoon, prepare to be amazed by the sprawling ancient citadel of Chan Chan, covering approximately 18 square kilometres. A visit to the Nik-An Palace, nestled in the south-west part of Chan Chan, offers a fascinating insight into its ceremonial squares, places of worship, reservoirs, barns, and cemeteries.
