Janjanbureh 2-day tour

4.3/5
33 reviews

This excursion will take you over 300 km into The Gambia and gives you a chance to see most parts of the country and old monuments, such as the famous Stone Circles.

ITINERARY

Day 1: After an early departure from your hotel, you will head straight for the ferry terminal in Banjul to cross Barra located on the North bank of The Gambia. Your first stop will be Fort Bullen which is the first antislavery fort built in the region. Here you will take a guided tour that will introduce you to the history of the place.

After a short coffee break, continue to Farafenni market, Lumo, which is a relatively busy market. You will then stop at the Wassu Stone circles, the largest concentration of stone circles seen anywhere in the world, built between the third century B.C. and the sixteenth century AD.

From here you will head to Kuntaur for a 4 hours boat trip along the River Gambia. Have lunch while sailing along the mangrove swamps and be lucky enough to spot hippos, monkeys and crocodiles. The first day of your trip ends at the Jang Jang Burreh Camp. This is a traditional camp, built in African huts style. All accommodations are en-suite. Enjoy a folkloric music performance by the villagers during dinner.

Day 2: The next day, wake up and walk around the camp for bird watching and some wildlife spotting. After breakfast, leave the camp for a stop at the village of Georgetown, locally called Jang Jang Burreh. This village is also the administrative centre for the central river division.

I thought our guide, Mo, was excellent. He knew everything about the area, without being boring. We saw a lot of wildlife.

The overall trip was good, but the accommodation for the evening and hygiene was really quite appalling. I understand the idea is too experience the raw side of life in The Gambia but the small basic lodges were infested with crickets, beetles and other insects. Trying to keep them out of the bed was a nightmare.

I was in safe hands, and good company from the moment they collected me from reception to the moment they dropped me off. Driver Adamu and Guide Mo have just the right balance of friendly and professional. This is an 'experience' that lives up the name, I wouldn't have known Gambia without it. Great value for money too. The camp is not the Savoy but that's part of the experience .

I think the description on the TUI website has to change. It is two full day trip. There is lunch provided on the 2nd day, which is not mentioned in the description. It is a positive add on but it means you are back to your hotel after 4pm. The description does not mention a school visit either. It also does not mention lack of any drinks. I do not mind if soft drinks and alcoholic drinks are at extra cost but water should be part of the trip as part of the meals. It is long, hot two days.

Fantastic trip and highly recommend if want to see the real Gambia. Ferry trip, brief market stop, Wassu stones, river trip (was just sublime- okay old boat but my goodness the views and to relax was just bliss), camp with monkeys goats and dogs- the latter two well behaved! Then smaller boat trip to Macarthy Island, janjanbureh whislte stop tour, visit a family and home! Ibrihim is a truly good man and amazing guide. Bring water, torch, battery pack and open mindedness.
