What to do in Barcelona

Avant-garde Barcelona, a fascinating city brimming with ground-breaking architecture, culture and gastronomy. Immerse yourself in Antoni Gaudi’s masterpieces, such as the fantastic Sagrada Familia and Park Güell. Relax on the city beaches, savour Catalan cuisine and explore the winding alleys of the Gothic Quarter. With its inspiring blend of history, art and modernity, a visit to this city promises to be a feast for the senses. We’ve listed the best activities in Barcelona for you.

Top six things to do in Barcelona

1. Marvel at the Sagrada Familia

The unfinished Sagrada Familia bears witness to Gaudi’s visionary genius. Construction of the basilica began in 1882 and is expected to be completed in 2026. The architectural style, an example of Catalan modernism, fascinates with its intricate façades and high spires. Inside, a kaleidoscopic interior awaits, with stained-glass windows and organic shapes inspired by nature. A visit to the Sagrada Familia promises an absorbing journey through the mind of a master architect, leaving you in awe of its unparalleled beauty and religious splendour.

2. Stroll through Park Güell

A second Gaudi masterpiece not to be missed is Park Güell, which is located in hills on the edge of the city. This UNESCO World Heritage Site showcases intricate mosaic artwork, winding paths and unique architectural elements. Admire the iconic Salamander Staircase – El Drac in Catalan – and wander through the forest of crooked columns in the colonnade. The beauty of Park Güell and the panoramic view of the city make it a must-visit. Lose yourself in the architect’s imaginative world and experience the magic in every corner of this extraordinary park.

3. Admire Casa Batlló

Gaudi’s Casa Batlló is another of his architectural gems in Barcelona. The façade, decorated with colourful tiles, wavy lines and skeletal balconies, will not leave you indifferent. Step into this special house and let yourself be transported to a world full of wonders. Gaudi’s imaginative genius is brought to life through intricate detail, organic shapes and innovative use of light and space. From the extraordinary interior to the extraordinary roof, every corner of Casa Batlló is a testament to Gaudi’s unparalleled vision.

4. Visit La Pedrera–Casa Milà

La Pedrera – also known as Casa Milà – is located near the Casa Batlló on Passeig de Gracia and is the latest Gaudi masterpiece on our list. The distinctive modernist style, with undulating stone walls and wrought-iron balconies, shows Gaudi’s love of organic forms. Inside, you can explore the Espai Gaudi, a museum dedicated to the architect’s life and work, and head to the rooftop, adorned with sentry-like chimneystacks.

5. Explore the Camp Nou

Camp Nou, the legendary football stadium of FC Barcelona, is a must for sports and football fans. It exudes a rich sporting history and an incomparable atmosphere. The Camp Nou Experience allows you to explore the stadium, visit the club’s museum and relive memorable moments. A major renovation is currently underway to make the stadium even more impressive. But you can still visit the Barça Museum and take a look at the work in progress.

6. Modern art at the Moco Museum

Art lovers will not be short of things to do in Barcelona, either. A stone’s throw from the Picasso Museum is the Moco Museum, in the middle of the hip El Born district. This museum, which only opened its doors in 2021, is entirely dedicated to modern and contemporary art. You can admire works by innovators such as Banksy, Salvador Dali, Keith Haring, Andy Warhol and Yayoi Kasuma. A visit to the museum is an interesting experience in Barcelona that is fun for both young and old.

Get ready to visit Barcelona

When’s the best time to visit Barcelona?

With sunny days all year round, there’s no such thing as a bad time to visit Barcelona. July and August are high seasons, which means accommodation prices go up and queues are longer for the city’s major attractions. The weather is quite hot during the summer, and many small businesses tend to shut for the holidays. On the other hand, this is the best time to plan your trip if you want to go to the beach or attend the tons of international music festivals, cultural activities and outdoor events the city has to offer. If you prefer a less crowded time to go with cooler weather, then May, June, September and October are ideal. Winter also has its charms. Temperatures tend to drop, but not too much, and it’s easy to get nice sunny days. During the holidays, Christmas decorations and events light up the city with a festive spirit.

How many days should you spend in Barcelona?

Three or four days is enough to comfortably visit Barcelona’s main highlights, with enough time to do some shopping and sip sangria at one of the city’s best terraces. But if you want to discover the more authentic side of Barcelona, we recommend you stay for at least a week. Not only will you have the chance to explore lesser-known locations, such as Sitges and Montserrat, but you’ll also be able to blend in with the locals by having a picnic on Montjuïc hill, a bike ride along La Barceloneta or spending a fun-filled day at PortAventura theme park. You’ll also have time to check out restaurants, sample all kinds of tapas, and indulge in Spain’s vibrant nightlife.

Where are the best places to stay in Barcelona?

Barcelona has an excellent public transport system that makes it easy to get around the city, wherever you are. However, if you want to be as central as possible and close to the main attractions, then the Gothic Quarter – Barcelona’s historic centre – or the more chic and modernist Eixample are among the best areas to stay. Top attractions such as Plaça Reial, Casa Batlló and the Sagrada Familia are waiting to be discovered in these neighbourhoods. Looking for a more fashionable and authentic spot? Then the Gràcia and El Born neighbourhoods are ideal if you want quaint streets with nice bars where you can mingle with the locals. Searching for a close stay near the beach or dine with some of the freshest fish? Then accommodation in La Barceloneta is a must.
