Guided birdwatching experience in Cobá ancient Maya city with brunch

Nestled deep within the lush jungle, the ancient Maya city of Cobá is both an impressive archaeological site and a premier destination for birdwatchers. Once the largest urban centre in northern Yucatán between 300 and 900 AD, Cobá flourished thanks to its diverse ecosystems, which included several freshwater lakes. Today, visitors have the opportunity to explore its historical significance and discover a remarkable variety of bird species in an unparalleled setting.

The tour begins with a tranquil walk around Lake Cobá, where water-loving species such as the Spotted Rail, Least Grebe, Ruddy Crake, Limpkin, Snail Kite and Purple Gallinule can be spotted. The surrounding vegetation may also reveal colourful birds such as the Gray-crowned Yellowthroat, Blue-gray Tanager, Yellow-winged Tanager, Hooded Oriole and Orange Oriole.

As the gates of the archaeological site open, you'll be among the first to enter the dense primary jungle that now surrounds this ancient city. Here, your birdwatching adventure continues as you seek out species such as the magnificent ocellated turkey, Lesson's motmot and turquoise-browed motmot, as well as various trogons, including black-headed, gartered and collared trogons, and masked and black-crowned tityras, Yucatán and green jays. Depending on the season, it's possible to spot between 40 and 80 species in just one morning. After a morning spent birdwatching, you'll enjoy a delicious local meal.
