About the Palace of the Versailles

The Palace of Versailles is a dazzling journey into French royal history. Originally a humble hunting lodge built by Louis XIII, his son Louis XIV expanded it into a magnificent palace from 1661 to 1678. He also moved the royal court and government to Versailles. Its golden gates welcome you to explore 2,300 opulent rooms, artistic treasures, baroque architecture and gardens.

Inside, you’ll get a glimpse of the Sun King’s vision to showcase the grandeur of the monarchy and establish a private escape from crowded Paris. From the sparkling Hall of Mirrors to the opulent King’s and Queen’s Royal Apartments – every room is an eye-catching display of art and rich symbolism. Additionally, the Royal Chapel and Opera House add to its allure.

The gardens are a visual delight, with greenery and water features to discover. And during the summer, the gardens spring to life with fountain displays and musical walks. While splendid, they alas pale in comparison to events hosted by Louis XIV, such as his six-day-long ‘party of the Delights of the Enchanted Island’. Also located on the grounds are the Grand Trianon – a summer retreat for the royal family – the Petit Trianon, and Marie Antoinette’s quaint English-style hamlet.
